While the design and construction of inflatable boats and inflatable rafts have been around for over 2,100 years, it is just recently that they have become a safe, reliable, and very trustworthy vessel. However, some people doubt the abilities of inflatable boats. They feel that simply because they are not entirely solid, the boat is not safe. The truth of the matter is quite contrary to that. In fact, there are many different aspects that make them safe and practical for many purposes.
Buoyancy and carrying capacity. Several of the most basic features of inflatable boats and rafts directly enhance the carrying capacity and buoyancy of the boats. First, the bottoms of these boats are flat.
This means that weight is distributed evenly while the boat sits flat on the water. Passengers can move around much easier without the worry of tipping. In fact, inflatables are nearly impossible to flip (in normal circumstances). Also, with their buoyancy tubes, they are able to carry many passengers. Some larger boats are even known to haul heavy cargo such as vehicles.
Mark free design. Many traditional yacht owners can attest to the frustration felt when other watercraft are hauled aboard their boat only to leave unsightly marks. With inflatable boats, this is not a worry since the materials that the boats are made of do not leave scuff marks.
Convenient collars. Most inflatables are made with a collar design. This means that the tubes that hold the air can easily be slid off of a fiberglass hull. There are several benefits to this feature. First, the boat can easily be stored when the collar is removed and deflated. The collar and the hull can then be stored separately as to not risk damaging one part or the other. Also, this is a convenient feature when repairs are needed.
Portability and storage. One aspect that inflatables are hailed for is their weight and portability. Since the boat is made out of lightweight materials, it doesn't weight particularly much when fully intact. When the buoyancy tube is deflated, however, it makes the boat even lighter. This is incredibly useful for those who wish to travel with their boat, move it frequently while using it, or even for storing it. Since it can essentially be deflated and rolled up, it does not take much room in storage. This is one feature that is most commonly associated with the adaptability of inflatable boats. |
