Dory boats are small boats that are fun to bring on the water to enjoy fishing or enjoy a day of rowing on the lake. These small boats are also easy to build as they just commonly made of wood and because they have simple lines as well. Even if you are not a professional woodworker, you can actually build your own dory and save some good amount of cash than buying one. Aside from being small, dory boats are lightweight and have high sides and flat bottoms. Their designs are also capable of transporting quite a good amount of load and still retain its balance. If you are living near a lake or the sea and you love to go fishing or just having fun rowing in the waters, and you want to build your own dory with your own design, you can actually find dory plans that will help you on how to build one. Prepare the materials you will need. To build your own dory, you will need wood as your main material. Dories are originally made of wood and until the present, wood is still a popular choice among those who build dories. However, you can also choose to use aluminum or fiberglass for your dory project - that all depends on what material you are comfortable and skilled working with and also with the purpose of the dory that you want to build. Also start with a comfortable size that you can work with. Yes, you may be excited to build a large one, but it is always wise to start small especially if it is your first time in boat building. Of course, you have to consider the uses you want with your dory. Make sure also it is not too small for you as this would forfeit your chance to ever get on that dory and enjoy a day of rowing it. Also decide what type of mechanism your dory will run. Dories are originally powered by oars but if you want to modify it to have engines, you can also do it - but you have to make sure first that you are in a State or vicinity that allows engines on small boats or dories, especially if you are in a river or a lake. Of course, one of the fun things about dories is the rowing thing, so if you do want to have some fun, go ahead and build your own dory with the oars. Although with the traditional dory boats powered by oars are not faster on water, it can be a good boat to relax, go fishing or just exploring the lake or river. It is important too that before you start with your boatbuilding project, you already have boat plans or dory plans for your project. Whether you are a beginner in boatbuilding or not, it is wise to have dory plans ready before you start with work. Of course you work will not be efficient if you are doing a trial and error with your boat building. So grab a boat plan before starting to build your own dory.
